Electric Propulsion Methods for Small Satellites: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Over 2500 active satellites are in orbit as of October 2020, with an increase ~1000 smallsats the past two years. Since 2012, over 1700 have been launched into orbit. It is projected that by 2025, there will be 1000 per year. Currently, these do not sufficient delta v capabilities for missions beyond Earth They confined to their pre-selected and most cases, they cannot avoid collisions. Propulsion systems on provide orbital manoeuvring, station keeping, collision avoidance safer de-orbit strategies. In return, this enables longer duration, higher functionality This article has reviewed electrostatic, electrothermal electromagnetic propulsion methods based state art research current knowledge base. Performance metrics which space can evaluated presented. The outlines some existing limitations shortcomings electric thruster technologies. Moreover, discussion contributes discourse identifying potential avenues improve advance smallsats. placed emphasis enable interplanetary missions, while alternative approaches also received attention text, including light sails nuclear amongst others.

Power conversion and scaling for vanishingly small satellites with electric propulsion
The development of ion electrospray propulsion systems (iEPS) as integrated microelectromechanical systems (i.e. MEMS) effectively miniaturizes propulsion for nanosatellites. Current iEPS thrusters consist of arrays of ion emitters, with a thruster for CubeSat application consisting of hundreds of emitters on a 1 cm 2 package. As a consequence, the lower bound on the size of satellites incorpor...

Some of the major space operational capabilities desired for modernizing and transforming our existing space infrastructure include: 1) in-space robotic assembly of modular structures, 2) routine spacecraft repositioning and rescue services, 3) use of formations of satellites that can perform functions not possible with traditional single large structures. All of these applications can make use...

This contribution presents a short review of electric propulsion (EP) technologies for satellites and spacecraft. Electric thrusters, also termed ion or plasma thrusters, deliver a low thrust level compared to their chemical counterparts, but they offer significant advantages for in-space propulsion as energy is uncoupled to the propellant, therefore allowing for large energy densities. Althoug...
